It started Wednesday evening with a fun evening in Warga, the viewing of the Vitens-auction stallions. On Thursday the 2nd viewing with commentary, which allowed people to really learn from the selection process. That evening the PAVO stallion competition finals took place for the approved stallions, not yet approved on offspring, competing under saddle and in harness. It gave us more information on what these stallions are capable of, what they look like, and how they move. Interesting to also see the different riders and how they had the stallions perform. Always keep in mind the rider can add or detract. Then on Friday the third viewing and final selection for the 2009 stallion performance testing, the Vitens auction, clinics, and a show evening. Saturday was the day the approved stallions and the stallions selected for the testing were presented, along with the championship round, the elite auction of 9 previously selected stallions (some going on to the testing, and some not, an interesting gamble on purchasing an expensive ster stallion/foalbook breeder abroad or perhaps a pretty good deal on an approved stallion), various shows, and the presentation of Tsjerk preferent with his sons. It just about brough tears to your eyes. Various people were honored, and it was the conclusion of three pack-jammed days. Don’t miss out on the Mare Show with 130th anniversary celebration of KFPS in October, 10/23 & 24. I’ve already been asked back to translate at next year’s stallion show. That is fantastic. Doing this every day didn’t leave much time for shopping or socializing, but having a wireless mike, great food three times a day in the back restaurant, and being able to stay to myself in the sound tower with view over the arena on the busy Saturday made a big difference. Every year I meet more people and every year it thus becomes more fun. This spring Phryso, the KFPS studbook magazine, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with an anniversary publication in English! Over time there will be more issues but for now that is the one for this year. Back to index. December 2008 Stallion News December 2008, 12/14/08. Separate scores for driving and show driving during performance testing, 1/25/08. The evaluations during the stallion performance testing in harness with driving and show-driving will from this year be scored with two separate sets of scores. Up to now there was only one score for the harness disciplines. By separating driving and show driving the specific show-driving and driving abilities of a stallion will be made visible, which will give breeders more information. The scores are composed as follows. Source: KFPS website, translated by Anneke. Back to index. December 2007 New breeding values for exterior and sport aptitude, 12/24/07. The annual breeding-value estimation for stallions and mares has been adjusted. In addition to adding the inspection results and ABFP-test results of 2007 there are three more adaptations. One of the adjustments: Basic adjustment. Breeding values are estimated compared to a population average. This average is set at 100. Up to this year all horses inspected and born in 1991 were used as the basis for exterior. For the breeding values for sport aptitude 1998 was the basis. For both components, exterior and sport aptitude, the basis is now defined as all horses born in 2001. Given the fact that in the 10 years between 1991 and 2001 the horses have improved genetically, the stallions will compared to the population average score slightly less high. For exterior this difference is about 2 index points and for movement (in hand) 3 to 4 index points. This adjustment is the same for all stallions and thus does not influence the order of quality for the stallions. Breeding values compared to the new basis (2001) give a better insight into the quality of a stallion. Find the new Breeding Values on the KFPS website and more info in my newsletters. On Wednesday morning 10/31 Feitse 293 pref died at the age of 24. Feitse was from stam 70, stood at 1.60m at age four, Jochem 259 x Bjinse 241 x Noldus 198. He did his testing in the spring of 1987 at age four. He was bred by G. Wijbenga of Roodkerk and stood at Hengstenhouderij Toonen since 1999. He just produced another model mare at the 10/20 Central Mare Show in Leeuwarden. Visit www.kfps.nl for his stats. For pictures see also http://www.markus-neuroth.de/html/feitse_293_p.html. I'm glad I still go to see him at the stallion show. Here's my translation of a portion of the July 2007 Phryso feature on www.hhtoonen.nl (see the Toonen website for fabulous Feitse pictures). The Master’s Eye At that time Bertus traveled throughout the country with the stallion but along the way he would also buy foals he liked. It’s hard to describe what that was like. “It is the total of self carriage, conformation, and movement, but definitely also the way in which they look out into the world. My father once said that the best teacher is your wallet and I believe there is a basis of truth there. If you paid a lot of money for the wrong purchase then you pay much more attention the next time. At that time Gerlof foals brought in 1500 to 2000 guilders but I purchased a stud colt here just across the river in March 1990 for 4500 guilders. I would always call my purchases in to Jeanne who kept up a book at home which horse I purchased where and when we would have to pick it up. I did not really dare to tell her this though.” Jeanne Toonen: “He came home in the evening and when after much delay he finally told me what he had purchased and for how much I thought it was ridiculous. I also did not want to go look. After a few months that foal received a 2nd premie at the inspection in Esbeek but also then I did not look at the horse. The next day Bertus picked him up and when he walked off the truck to the barn he right away stole our hearts. He stood there at the bottom of the walk-up and looked around as though to say: “And now dare to say I’m not beautiful.” This stud colt was Teunis 332 (Gerlof 294 x Lammert 260). The first Friesian stallion the third generation Toonen got approved themselves. Teunis died at the age of 12 from a stomach rupture. Although it’s already been five years the memory of it still hurts. Say Bertus: “Teunis was a real special horse and the sweetheart of us all. He stood at 1.69m/16.2 ½ hands and passed that height on perfectly. Therefore he got many small mare of, e.g., 1.54m/15 ¾ hands for breeding. Moreover, he passed along a long forearm and those nice necks. He was also very massive. Already with the first foals I felt that they needed Feitse blood. It didn’t have to be larger and Feitse gives hardness and luxury.” Eight years ago they talked with the (German) owner of Feitse 293 pref (Jochem 259 x Bjinse 241) in Helden-Panningen and a few days later they bought the then 16 year old stallion. Just in time, because otherwise this stallion too would have moved to the United States. From De Paardenkrant: Preferent Friesian breeding stallion Feitse passed away quietly in his sleep. The Friesian breeding stallion Feitse died last week Wednesday quietly in his sleep at the age of 24. “He died from old age and was not sick. Feitse said goodbye to us. First to Bertus, then to our daughter Joke, and then to me,” said an emotional Jeanne Toonen. Feitse has had a big influence on breeding. He left us with countless ster offspring and various model mares. At the last Central Mare Show another daughter became model, namely Arendina van de Zonschate. Another model daughter, Anke R., is the dam of breeding stallion Jorn. Also on the stallions of the brred he had a big influence. Six sons of Feitse serve as breeding stallions: Folkert, Fetse, Tsjerk, Rypke, and Ait stand at stud in The Netherlands, of which Tsjerk was the barn buddy fo Feitse. Feitse son Feike stands at stud in America. Back to index. Ordering of tickets for the 2008 stallion show, 11/2/07. Dryske fan de Slachtedyk (Teunis 332 x Djurre 284) by breeder/owner J. van der Wal of Bozum won the overall day championship of the Central Mare Show for the 3rd time today! Dryske already showed too strong for the competition in the championship for the older mares and and beat the yearlings, two year olds and three year old mares in the over championship round. Renske van Diphoorn (Onne 376 x Sierk 329) by breeder/owner the Ensing family Ensing of Diphoorn won the reserve day championship after she had already won the championship for the yearlings and two-year olds. Champion of the 3 year old mares became Mira-Viktoria vom Lindenbaum (Tsjalke 397 x Feitse 293P) owned by H. Joriskes of Bruggen. The afternoon program of the show started with the finals of the Young Friesian Horses with aptitude in show driving/mares. The winner became Gouddame fan Bommelsteyn (Onne 376 x Feitse 293P) by breeder/owner J.J. van der Meulen of Broek-Noord. Gouddame was driven by Mrs. T. van Proosdij. First place in the finals Young Friesian Horses with aptitude for show driving/stallions and geldings was for Imko van de Wolfshaar (Folkert 353 x Ulke 338) by owner/driver M. Verboord of Vlijmen. For the model prdicate 15 mares were invited by the judges. They were all awarded model. Because most of them had already scored (more than) sufficient for their IBOP 12 mares became permanent model and 3 preliminary mode. The latter will have one year to do a successful IBOP test. The winners in the competition Young Friesian Horses with dressage aptitude went in the class for 4 y.o. stallions and geldings to Jouk (Olof 315 x Hearke 254P), ridden by K. de Kluis and owned by K.H.A. de Kluis of Nijmegen. Daniël de G. (Abel 344 x Jakob 302) owned by Ted Kop Jansen bv of Wapse was ridden by Judith Pietersen and won the class for 5 & 6 y.o. stallions and geldings. Of the 4 y.o. mares it was Kyra W.T. (Fetse 349 x Olof 315), owned by Demrostables in Mierlo and ridden by J. Veenstra that won (bred by judge Wil Thijssen, Anneke), and of the 5 & 6 y.o. mares I.Klooster with Haitrix (Maiko 373 x Brandus 345) owned by G. Schuurman of Lemele won first place. Central Mare Show 2007 promises to be interesting, 9/21/07. On October 20, 2007 it’s that time again! The Central Mare Show of the Koninklijke Vereniging “Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek”, already for the second year as part of the Friesian Show, will take place at the beautiful settting of the WTC Expo in Leeuwarden (FEC). Given the large number of entries the morning program will start earlier than ever. The first of the 183 entered inspection horses will present themselves to the judges and visitors at 7.45 a.m. Last year the yearlings and two year olds were shown separately by the terrace but this year they will also be shown in the main arena so no one has to miss a horse. The participation in the youth class is with five horses a bit smaller than last year but this is compensated by the large number of entries for the ster-mare class. The class three-year-old ster mares is with 49 entries so well represented that this class had to be divided in four groups. Also the number of entries for the class seven-year-and-older ster mares is larger than last year. The 32 entries for this calss will try to earn the highest predicate for the mares, the preliminary model status. For this most prestigious predicate they do not just have to be shown at the Central Mare Show but also achieve a good-enough score in one of the user tests (IBOP/ABFP) and have produced at least one foal. One of the highlights of the show will also be the presentation of 16 model mares that will enter the the main arena in the afternoon. These mares are not ranked but the best mares will be invited by the judges to participate in the championship round. Jasper 366 is the sire of the most entries; 13 entries. Jasper son Beart 411 follows with 12 offspring. Then it’s Folkert 353 and Sape 381 with both 11 offspring, and Doaitsen 420, Heinse 354, and Leffert 306 pref with each eight offspring. On October 20 not only inspection horses can be admired. Also the finals for the competition for young Friesian horses with aptitude for show driving will be held. There is a separate finals for the mares and for the geldings and stallions that qualified at the breeding days. Another important segment is the finals of the young Friesian horses with dressage aptitude. Over the past summer season a large number of young dressage horses qualified for the finals. The sires with the most dressage offspring are Brandus 345 and Jasper 366 with each 5 offspring, followed by Fabe 348, Jakob 302, Sape 381, and Tetse 394 with each 3 offspring. The 53 mares, stallions, and geldings will have their first evaluation in the morning in their own ring by the terrace. The best three of each class will be presented in the main arena in the afternoon where the placement of the top three will be announced. Judging-team member Herman Smit will elaborate on the performances of the combinations for the audience. In short, with such a variety in classes we have something for every Friesian-horse lover at the Central Mare Show 2007! Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Away, 7/17/07.
From Holland Friesians.com
and an ISF connection. In the Dutch version it said some
sort of infection (from ISP: exploratory colic surgery and
laminitis problems) got the better of him (from ISF: he had
to be put down). Read all about Winand on the Iron Spring
website. Unfortunately he was not available with frozen. At
least he made it far enough through his offspring testing.

In the June issue of Phryso on page 42 (article on inbreeding) a bothersome mistake was printed. On this page it is erroneously printed that this year the striving is to award 1 in 4 inspected foalbook mares ster, while this was still 1 in 3 in 2006. The author apparently mistakenly interpreted what was printed as part of the inspection policies as printed in the April Phryso on page 62. There it is stated that the ster percentage during the last 10years went up from on average 1 in 4 to 1 in 3. The inspection determined that a ster percentage of 1 in 3 is desirable and it should be strived for to not further increase the ster percentage. The reason for this is the importance to maintain the value of the ster predicate. Of course this policy applies to a complete inspection year. The supposition that this ideal ster percentage would be applied at every inspection is of course incorrect. Source: KFPS website. DOETINCHEM – The breeding council of the Friesian horse studbook (KFPS) is for now agreeing with the half-hearted measures to protect the breeding population against the hereditary defects water on the brain and dwarfism. The importance of blood distribution and the interests of stallion owners apparently weigh heavier than openness to the breeders. This comes from a confidential letter that ended up at the editors’ office of De Paardenkrant. It’s estimated that this year 80 foals will be born with defects. Stil before the beginning of the new breeding season on April 17, 2007, the Vereniging Friese Hengsten (VFH)/Association of Friesian stallions and the breeding council discussed the problem of foals with water on the brain and dwarfism. Notes of the conversation were sent to the members of VFH. Both organizations agreed on one thing: the serious defects that render horses worthless are undesired and have to be addressed. Agreement between KFPS and FPZV is further shaped, 5/7/07. As published earlier, an agreement was reached on March 30 between KFPS, FN, and the German daughter studbook FPZV about the registration of offspring of FPZV approved stallions in the KFPS registers. On May 4, this agreement was further worked on during a follow-up discussion in Drachten. Foals that are sired by FPZV-approved stallions, that are possibly offered to KFPS for registration, will be registered by KFPS in a new register. This new register is positioned hierarchically between the KFPS main register and B-book I. The register will carry the name KFPS-D. The “D” stands for daughter studbook. Offspring of mares in this KFPS-D register can after one generation be registered in the main register of KFPS, if the sire of the foal is a KFPS approved stallion (see registration chart). Offspring of stallions that were disapproved by KFPS and taken over as a breeding stallion by FPZV will be registered in B-book II as was already the case. It was also agreed that the studbook certificate that goes with the KFPS-D register will have a distinctive color that is to be determined by KFPS. It is also agreed upon that if a hors/foal is registered by a studbook and was issued a certificate by this studbook that such a horse can be reregisteed with another studbook but that such a horse will keep the original certificate and register. In other words, a foal/horse with an FPZV paper that is purchased by a KFPS member (in, e.g., Germany) cannot be issued a KFPS paper (and v.v.) KFPS and FPZV will have close contact to prevent double registrations. On the certificate for foals in the KFPS-D register, the sire will be marked with the register in which he is registered with KFPS: FPZV HB1. The same will be the case for other FPZV horses in the lineage. The agreements will be implemented in the studbook regulations of the KFPS. In how far this will be put into practice is the question. Up to now no foals or breedings by FPZV stallions have been reported to the KFPS. Foals and horses will be registered according to this chart. Two Friesian stallions will continue the spring performance testing after completing the first part; the evaluation under saddle. That took place this morning in Ermelo. The stallions that will continue are four year old Jesse J. (Leffert x Doeke, see photo) by breeder M. Jellesma in Rotstergaast and five year old Haiko van de Elsenerhof (Sape x Jurjen) by breeder B.C. Nijhof in Markelo. Jesse J. scored 75,5 ppoints under saddle while Haike with 70 points was in the grey zone. “Still we do not want to discard him right away. He may prove himself in harness. The scores are sufficient to have him continue,” Harrie Draaijer, chairman of the stallion-inspection committee. Four year old Lenard (Karel x Teunis) and Jorrit fan Stal Redia (Jasper x Peke) are not allowed to continue for showing too little progress. Two stallions have meanwhile been added to the harness testing. They got injured during the harness testing of the 2006 fall performance testing. They are Leonhard vom Lindenbaum (Onne x Feitse) and Jehannes de G. (Olrik x Abel). The final evaluation in harness takes place on Saturday May 5. Source: De Paardenkrant. Back to index. March 2007 KFPS reaches agreement with FN and FPZV about registration, 3/31/07. The KFPS has reached an agreement with the German FN and KFPS daughter FPZV on a solution for the problems regarding the registration of offspring from FPZV approved stallions. The solution consists of setting up a new register within the KFPS for offspring of stallions that are approved by a European KFPS daughter. It was also agreed that stallions that have been disapproved by KFPS and were “taken over” by the FPZV will retain their current status. The offspring of these stallions will remain registered by KFPS in B-book II. Up to now the offspring of all FPZV approved stallions were registered in B-book II by KFPS. After four generations of offspring from KFPS-approved stallions the offspring could be entered from the B-book back into the main register. In the new situation foals of dams from the new register can after one generation be entered into the main register of KFPS, if they are sired by a KFPS stallion. “This solution provides a more correct status for FPZV stallions. These stallions, given the fact that they underwent an inspection process, cannot be put at the same level as any random foalbook stallion of which possible offspring is entered into B-book II. However, the differences in breeding goals and selection policies between the KFPS and FPZV are still too big to put the stallions of both studbooks on an equal level,” says KFPS director Ids Hellinga further to the choice. The complexity of the problem was especially the fact that many parties have interests in the matter, such as also the DFZ (the KFPS breeding chapter in Germany) and the stallion owners/managers. “The KFPS included all interested parties in the discussions, which led to a solution that is agreeable to all parties in both Germany and The Netherlands,” says Hellinga. Also the Dutch Cattle Meat & Poultry agency PVE supports the new set-up. In the near future more talks will take place between KFPS, FN, and FPZV about further harmonization of the regulations and closer cooperation regarding breeding. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Inspector Arend Mandemaker passed away, 3/10/07. Last evening after a short and serious illness KFPS inspector Arend Mandemaker passed away. Our thoughts go out to Baukje Mandemaker and the children and we wish them lots of strength to deal with the loss. With Arend Mandemaker we lost a multi-faceted Friesian-horse man. Mandemaker was successful as a breeder of Friesian horses with the Ut ‘e Leanen barn name but he was also successful at show-driving competitions where he most recently won prizes with the team Jantyne and Tjallen ut ‘e Leanen. The KFPS benefited from his in-depth knowledge of the Friesian horse with him as a studbook inspector. The KFPS is endebted to Arend Mandemaker for his support for the association and above all his support for the Friesian horse. This Tuesday a farewell service will be held at riding school ‘De Oorsprong' in St. Nicolaasga, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Before that the opportunity to share condolences with the family. Fridse 423 and Tjesse 400 are coming to America, 12/15/06. Source: FHANA website and Anneke's research. FRIDSE 423 Coming to America! Author: Steven Feys Date: 12/15/2006 Coming soon to Wish Upon A Ster Friesians!! FRIDSE 423 • 1st premium stallion • Performance champion 2005 • Versatile stallion with a lot of potential • Tall stallion with beautiful front end “A promising stallion who excels in versatility. He completed his performance test in 2005 with beautiful marks (saddle test 81.0, driving test 82.9). The opinion of the judges was that he had a lot of potential as a riding, driving, and show driving horse! …the powerful use of his hind legs was mentioned several times. The fact that even after the late start of the breeding season (following the performance exam) he bred the maximum number of mares shows the confidence breeders have in him.” Sire: Teunis 332 Teunis is also the sire of Nanning 374, Monte 378, and Harmen 424, and he now has an approved grandson, Botte 414 (x Nanning 374). Constructive meeting KFPS en FPZV in Bonn, 12/1/06. Consultation in Bonn on the December,1st. 2006 about future cooperation between Dutch and German breeding organisations for Friesian Horses. Today the studbooks of Friesian horses in Germany and the Netherlands had a meeting in Bonn under the guidance of the German and Dutch competent authorities. Participating in this meeting were the KFPS and the FPZV, the competent authorities, represented by the Product Boards for Livestock Meat and Eggs (PVE) from the Netherlands, the German Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV ) and the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Forest in Hessen, which has approved the FPZV. The FN was representing all the approved German studbooks for Friesian Horses in the Federal States. It was a constructive meeting where all parties agreed to improve the direct communication and close co-operation between the studbook of origin and the approved filial studbooks and to act completely according EC-legislation. In particular the KFPS and FN/FPZV will come together to discuss the principles of breeding for Friesian Horses, especially the principles of the division of the studbooks and the selection criteria to be applied. The results will be put forward for approval to the competent authority in the Netherlands, the PVE, to be the principles laid down by the mother studbook. A deadline for approval was set to be the first of May. Based upon the above, all parties involved are confident that a framework is set up to improve communication and cooperation in the near future. Short term problems about registration of horses will be further discussed in February. In the mean time FPZV and KFPS will invite each other on a more informal level to inter-exchange thoughts of how to accomplish these short-term goals. In this respect KFPS cordially invited FPZV Board Members as well as the FN to their Stallion Show in January in Leeuwarden. KFPS also gladly accepted the invitation of FPZV that a KFPS inspector will be appointed as a member of the stallion licensing committee of the FPZV during their Körung in March. This is to be seen as a good start of the future cooperation. In the interest of FN, FPZV and the KFPS it was agreed, that apart from this statement, no further official comments will be made. Source: KFPS website. Translation by KFPS. The talk I heard is that the German stallions will go into a separate book for an unspecified amount of time, no other details yet. The foals and mares would be moved over to the regular books of KFPS but would in the future be subject to Dutch judging. Keep in mind that there are only so many mares anyway so our eye needs to be on the stallion developments. In the end I would be excited to have only one registry with the Dutch leading it with Dutch standards. Back to index. November Five New Stallions Entered in Studbook Register, 11/25/06. Eight Friesian stallions continue the fall testing in Drachten. The other ten left for home on 10/28 after the saddle test. The best performer under saddle with 86 points is Jerke van de Wittewijk. This Onne son out of a Tsjerk dam is owned by the Both family of Voorthuizen. Jerke left a terrific impression. He showed good movements and gave his rider a nice ride. The other stallions also continuing on with the testing are: - Jitse (Jasper x Dirk) van de combinatie Bangma-Vellinga te Oldeboorn (84,5) - Johan R. KFPS members choose for new structure, 10/28/06. At the general member meeting of the KFPS in Wolvega on 10/27 the vast majority voted for implementation of the structure changes. Per 10/28 the Member Council is the highest body of the KFPS instead of the member meeting as has been the case. The board also received approval for the 2007 budget, mandate for extending the rental agreement of the KFPS office for 10 years, and implementation of the Sport predicate for stallions, geldings, and mares. There was also a vote on the possible letting go of board member Bert Blom. The majority of members was against, meaning that Mr. Blom is officially no longer part of the studbook board. Source: KFPS & De Paardenkrant. Back to index. Meeting KFPS and FPZV on December 1, 10/26/06. On December 1, 2006 there will be a meeting between KFPS and FPZV where also representatives of the Dutch authority PVE, the German agriculture department, and German authority FN will be present. Reason for the talks is a complaint that the KFPS lodged with PVE about the way stallions are selected by FPZV. The FPZV separated itself from KFPS in 1991. Since then there has been no contact between the two parties. Based on EU regulations FPZV is a “daughter studbook” of the “mother studbook” KFPS. KFPS is of the opinion that based on this the communication with FPZV needs to be restored. The meeting on December 1 is a first step in this direction. KFPS is of the opinion that looking at the future we need to come to some sort of cooperation. Topics of discussion will be that a daughter studbook needs to hold itself to the guidelines of the mother studbook. As this is not the case now KFPS will for now remain of the opinion that offspring from FPZV approved stallions will be registered in KFPS’ B-book II. KFPS is further of the opinion that a cooperation with FPZV does not have to be in conflict with the current close cooperation with the KFPS members united in the German breeding association DFZ. With DFZ a cooperation contract was recently signed just as has been done with all other foreign breeding associations. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Two stallions leave the fall testing, 10/26/06. Two stallions will not take part in the final fall stallion evaluation under saddle this Saturday. It concerns the stallions Jorrit fan Redia (s. Jasper 366) and Jorn S.R. (s. Sape 381). Jorrit left the testing due to veterinary reasons. He may, if he is healed up, participate in the 2007 spring testing. Jorn was withdrawn from the testing per the advice of the stallion inspection team. This Saturday 18 stallions will be presented under saddle one by one. The judges will partially based on this presentation determine which stallions will continue with the testing and which stallions will be asked to leave. Start: 9 a.m. Source: KFPS website. The overall championship of the Central Mare Show went again to 5 year old Dryske fan de Slachtedyk (Teunis 332 x Djurre) owned by the Van der Wal family of Bozum. With this she repeated her win from 2004. Dryske impressed all day with her exceptionally strong trot and already won the championship with this for the 4 year and older mares beating last year's champion Gonda F.T. (Onne 376). During the overal championship she faced the most competition from the luxurious yearling and youth champion Rebekka G.T. (Doaitsen 420); she became Reserve champion. During the youth championship she won from 2 year old Martsje D. (Onne 376) with especially her light footed and very rhythmic trot, who in turn impressed with her beautiful breed type. The winners of the 3 year olds did not quite make it in the overall championship. Closest came 3 year old champion Jildau van Nes (Jasper 366). The full sister to Dries 421 won from Mintse 384 daughter Jiska D. for the 3 year olds. Dryske was unstoppable at the Central Mare Show. Next to the championship she also was awarded model. No less than 11 mares received the (preliminary) model predicate. A high point of the day was the impressive parade of older model mares, lead by 20 year old Kora (s. Hearke) with a record number of 17 model mares, including the dams of Sape 381, Ait 410, and Dries 421. Model mare Annichje fan Bokkum later on received the highest number of points with Jolanda Schreuder in the finale of the competition for young Friesian horses with dressage aptitude. There was lots to enjoy for the heavy crowd. "Absolutely a top day during which we had to pay very close attention during the inspections due to the closeness in quality," said Inspector Harrie Draaijer about the quality of the inspection. A long day with Dryske fan de Slachtedyk in the leading rol. As if that wasn't enough she wowed the whole crowd of Indoor Friesland again at 9 p.m. in the evening. Source: KFPS website. The KFPS is closing in on a positive financial result for 2006 said Board chairman Cees Roozemond today during a press conference that took place for the General Member Meeting on October 27. “This result is especially due to the fact that there is more rest now in our association.” Legal issues during the tumultuous year 2005 were then still the cause for a negative operational result. Roozemond also reported a continued increase in the number of members. The members of KFPS will during the upcoming General Member Meeting, at the Drafcentrum Wolvega, be faced with a choice that will be a strong influence on the future of the studbook. There will be a proposal to change the regulations to set up a member-council structure. The size of the association, over 13,000 members in over 30 countries, requires a different, more democratic, and workable structure. “The members have too little influence on the policies the way the situation is right now,” says Roozemond. With the new structure the members, represented in a member council, will have a say in important matters such as the breeding goal and the appointment of the members of, e.g., the inspection, the breeding council, and the stallion inspection team. Currently that is all limited to the board. A direct member consult is possible in the new structure for the most fundamental matters of the studbook (e.g. keeping the breed pure) by means of a corrective referendum. In addition to increased influence of the members on policies the new structure will provide a more direct way of communicating with the members. The board will elaborate on the policies annually in the ten inland and three foreign regions. During these regional meetings the (up to) 39 (up to 3 per region) member-council members will be elected. Chairman Roozemond is hopeful about the chance the proposal has to make it. He feels supported by the boards of the twelve breeding chapters that have already expressed their support for the proposal. Mr. Roozemond is hoping for a big attendance at the General Member Meeting. “It is an important decision and that is why a 2/3 majority is needed. We therefore really need the support of the members,” he says as a call to the members. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Members KFPS Sport Council appointed, 10/13/06. The General Management of the KFPS has appointed the members of the newly instituted Sport Council. The tasks of the Sport Council consist of the development of policies with the goal to improve the position of the Friesian horse in sport. Policy areas largely consist of stimulating and creating the conditions for progress. In addition the tasks of the Sport Council will interface with breeding topics by means of the Breeding Council. The Sport Council is just like the Breeding Council an advisory organ for the General Management. With the appointments the various disciplines are being optimally represented by people with a strong (practical) sport background and a clear vision of the possibilities of the Friesian horse in sport. The appointed members to the Sport Council are: Perry Boogaard of Vlissingen, Sjoerd Jan Keuning of Hemrik, Esther Liano of Wirdum, Saskia Meinema of Warmenhuizen, Jaap van der Meulen of Broek, Albert Minkema of Rottevalle. Changes in standards for semen quality for the 2007 stallion inspection, 9/14/06. Per the Breeding Council’s proposal KFPS decided to adjust the standards for semen quality. The objective of this adjustment is to increase the number of stallions that qualify. Without lowering the demands for quality. To this effect a new standard will be implemented in addition to the current standard for horses with a lower than 50% score for morphology. These stallions (morphology between 45 and 50%) will have to compensate the lower morphology value with a total number of moving cells that is 200 x 106 above the current standard. This means that stallions in the various age categories have to meet one of the two standards to be admitted to the second viewing during the stallion inspection in Leeuwarden. The KFPS expects that with the adjustments the number of stallions that will meet the standards will increase by about 10%. The stallions have to meet the following standard for the Stallion Inspection 2007: Read it all by subscribing to my weekly Friesian newsletter by e-mail. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. To the members of executive committees of organizations in other countries. Drachten: September 30, 2006 Our reference: 06.0156.sdb. engels Subject: New structure for the KFPS Dear Sir or Madam: Enclosed is a summary of the new structure being proposed for the KFPS. I ask that you place this summary on your website and in your association’s magazine/newsletter so that your members can become acquainted with it. I am also asking you to draw your members’ attention to the Dutch version of the structure report, the charter and the bylaws that can be downloaded from the KFPS website at www.kfps.nl. I hope this letter has provided you with sufficient information in this matter. On behalf of the structure committee, Yours truly, Sietse de Boer THE STRUCTURE OF THE KFPS This year’s autumn general membership meeting for the members of the KFPS will be held in the Drafcentrum Wolvega in Wolvega on Friday, October 27. The documents for this meeting can be found in the supplement included in this issue of Phryso. Listed on the agenda for the meeting is the change in the organization’s structure along with the motion to amend the charter and bylaws of the KFPS. (The supplement provides the entire text for this.) The structure report, the charter and the bylaws can also be viewed and/or downloaded from the KFPS website. We have now been working on this for four years. The new structure was supposed to have been voted on two years ago but having already heard the reactions of members to the proposals made at that time, it was decided not to put them to a vote. After discussing the issue with the breeding associations, a new committee was assembled. For various reasons, the structure committee installed at that time underwent a number of changes. In the meantime, the structure plan has now been prepared and a number of important parts have been refined. It is very important that we proceed with the new plans. An association that has 13,000 members in around 20 countries throughout the world and that involves millions of euros and major commercial interests can no longer be administrated as if it were a local equestrian association. Yet this is exactly what is going on at the moment. A few hundred members who come to the annual meeting are now determining what happens. If we want an administration that is efficient, in touch with regional associations, and that considers the input of members from future regions, you will have to take the time to attend the annual meeting and vote for the new structure. Great advantages offered by the new structure The new structure provides for ten regions in the Netherlands that correspond to the existing breeding associations and another three regions outside of the Netherlands: one for Germany, one for North America and one for other countries. Indirectly, all members will have the same influence and can easily address the representatives in their own region. The executive committee will attend the regional meeting where it will listen to the input of members. The council of members will be the association’s highest body, and each region will elect two or three representatives to this council of members. The most important tasks of the council of members will be: Ø appointing executive committee members and electing the chairperson Ø establishing policy Ø supervising financial procedures Ø assessing the functioning of the executive committee Ø establishing the charter and bylaws Ø approving appointments, including those for the inspection team, breeding council, sports council and stallion inspection committee Ø establishing breeding objectives and policy Ø establishing sports objectives and policy Still based in Friesland The studbook has its roots in Friesland. Important facilities and events will have to remain in Friesland, and certain important issues will still have to be dealt with in Friesland. These are established in the charter before you and can be changed only by means of a referendum held among all members in which 90% of the members vote in favor of such a change. Included are: Ø merger, dissolution, being absorbed in another organization Ø purity of the Frisian breed of horses Ø having the association’s registered domicile in Friesland Ø holding the central mare inspection in Friesland Ø holding the stallion inspection in Friesland Ø dispensing with the referendum Administrative procedure Members can lodge complaints about procedures or indicate their objections if they do not agree with a decision. The executive committee will then handle the complaint or objections and can be guided in this by a complaint committee. If the party who submitted the complaint or objection does not agree with the decision, an appeal can be made to an independent board of appeals. Preventing concentrations of power A term of office for practically every position will be four years with a maximum of two terms. Blood relatives and partners can no longer hold important positions simultaneously. Neither will it be possible for the same person to hold double positions. Preventing apparent conflicts of interest Stallion managers and persons whose main occupation is the keeping of horses may no longer occupy important positions. Summary of the major advantages: Ø a new structure for the association that includes regions and a council of members Ø the establishment of the position of associations/members in other countries Ø all members represented in the same way Ø a control over appointments Ø a complaints procedure and the possibility of appeal Ø reinforcement of Friesland as the basis of operations Ø prevention of conflicts of interest and concentration of power The Structure Committee Source: KFPS. And so it happened on that Sunday when The Netherlands played Portugal for the world cup soccer. During a gathering in Verden in north Germany the concern about the preservation of the baroque Friesian horse was shared. The same discussion was prominently shared by means of an internet questionnaire on the KFPS website. The central topic was the breeding goal of the studbook. This questionnaire rendered useful information for the breeding council and inspection for the renewed formulation of the breeding goal. For some the change to the modern Friesian horse can’t go fast enough, for others it’s a ghastly image that is categorized with “black KWPN horses.” It is by the way a misunderstanding that baroque or modern has anything to do with breed type. Breed type--characterized by front, shape of the neck, head, hair, and movement--is holy and has in 25 years of KFPS been virtually untouched. The discussion about modern or baroque has especially to do with built. That needs to be functional compared to the usage goal. It is logical that the built of the Friesian horse is/has been strongly subject to change. The baroquely built horse--heavier and with shorter legs--was desired in the period that the horse was used as a draft horse. Now that the Friesian horse is more and more popular in sport the modern-built horse is popular. Just like—and this is often forgotten—over one hundred years ago. The current direction of the Friesian horse is clear. The request for sport horses requires a more modern (sport) horse. It is also clear that this requires more than a lighter and longer-legged horse. It especially requires more of the movement. Genetic trends show, however, that over the past ten years we made more progress in modernizing the Friesian horse where it concerns exterior than where it concerns movement. Just like putting the body of a Ferrari on top of the frame of a Volkswagen Beatle will not render a faster car we will not just focus on built but will prioritize especially movement (and a correct judgement of it) in our striving for a more modern Friesian horse. This will among other things be expressed in the new formulation of the breeding goal and breeding policies. The new formulation by the way will not by definition bring bad news for the fans of the baroque Friesian horse, as was the case recently in Verden for soccer fans. A modern built horse is absolutely preferred. But a more baroque horse with good breed type and good basic gaits can also get the ster predicate within the “new” breeding goal.” Source: Board Column, August 2006 Phryso. Back to index. Sipke Riemersma champion unicorn for the third time, 08/03/06. On Wednesday during the annual category 1 horse show three national championships took place in Buitenpost. Sipke Riemersma with the Friesian horses of Watte Bruinsma took the title with unicorn for the third time. Four driving combinations took part in the title competition. Two of the four went on to the finale. Sipke drove Mark (s. Nikolaas), Hessel (s. Reitse), and Teun (s. Reitse). From the first to the last step they went even, did well, and showed beautiful self carriage. During the finale they showed a bit less of that posture. Sybren Minkema did not make it easy for them. He drove Mette (s. Djurre), Tonis (s. Tamme), and Tetse (s. Gradus), respectively owned by Henk Minkema, Klaas van de Ploeg, and Christine Meinecke. These three horses developed during the competition and kept on doing better. The combinations of Albert Minkema and Frits de Jong obtained a third and fourth place. Source: De Paardenkrant. The light-tour combinanations were able to ride two tests during the Bronckhorst Horse Days in Steenderen. Christa Laarakkers with Friesian stallion Tsjabring (s. Brandus) was the strongest combination in the Prix St. Georges and Tosca Visser won with Opportunity the DS-7. “Tsjabring, or Tjibbe Ylcke as he’s known at our barn, has an exceptional amount of potential for a Friesian. It’s wonderful to show him and will continue with him,” says Christa Laarakkers enthusiastically about the Friesian stallion. In Prix St. Georges the two earned 64,13%. “That’s not an exceptionally high percentage but if you take into account that we made three big mistakes in the canter part then 64 is beautiful. Tsjabring had a nice, flawless trot section. Before the canter part I thought: “O great, now the canter. That always goes really well. But not this time as some mistakes came up. It was like our concentration for me or the horse was not quite right.” Christa couldn’t quite say what it was. “The nice thing about Tsjabring is that people who are not into Friesians also think he’s great.” Results Prix St. Georges: 1.Christa Laarakkers, Tsjabring (64,13%); 2.Joyce Vroom, Nysingh Ramanaz (62,75%); 3.Carolien Reverdink, Port Au Prince (62,63%); 4.Nathalie Smeets, Grandia’s Perro (61,88%); 5.Tosca Visser, Opportunity (61,38%); 6.e.a.Diana van der Spek, Mister DS en Olga Boucher, Merudin (61%); 8.Ilse van Cranenbroek, Luciano Pavarotti (60,75%); 9.Alice Schuurman, Pitball (60,63%); 10.e.a.Cor Jager, Jager’s Paganini en Kristel Bodewes, Jonkvrouw (60,50%); 12.Jaap van der Heuij, Juultje H (60,13%). June 2006 KFPS-Board Column, 6/30/06, as published in the June 2006 Phryso, by Ids Hellinga. How true this one is. Euro skepticism. Our daily actions are more and more determined by the rules from Brussels. An increasing integration within Europe is inevitable. You don’t have to be a Euro skeptic, however, to occasionally frown upon the effects of said regulations. This most likely happened to Secretary of the Environment Pieter van Geel when his plan to make exhaust filters for diesel motors mandatory per next year was disapproved by Brussels. As not all care makers are able to outfit their vehicles with such filters on short term notice such a regulation is seen s obstruction of free trade within the EU. The conclusion is that free trade apparently is more important in EU law than striving for a better environment. Completely comparable with the above are the EU regulations applicable to studbook registration. These too have as the most important objective the protection of free trade. In this case it’s not a car but its predecessor, the horse. Horse loving Holland obviously benefits from good international trade possibilities. But there is more involved. Studbooks benefit from a strong breeding program to realize breeding objectives. Especially to distinguish itself in a positive sense. Whether it concerns exterior, sport aptitude or reducing inbreeding: the importance of a good breeding program is crucial. And it is exactly the maintaining of a good breeding program that is seriously hampered by the current regulations. The regulations stipulate that the studbooks are to accept each other’s registration but does not set any requirements for the selection criteria and methods used. The studbook with the lowest requirements is herewith put in charge! This has been recognized in 2003 by the interest group of the Dutch horse studbooks, the Industry Council for Horses of the PVE (Dutch agricultural government agency that governs the equine industry) as proven by a publication about the loopholes in the EU regulations. Apparently it did not go any further than an observation. Reason for the KFPS and many of its members to frown upon and be outraged about the recent return of two disapproved stallions (and by daughter FPZV re-approved). It will actually not remain an observation. The KFPS is working hard to solve this problem the right way. Products from an advanced breeding program such as that of the KFPS have to be able to be presented with distinction in the market just like some car makes market their cars as environmentally friendly. Exactly, the ultimate form of honest (international) competition. Source: Phryso. Back to index. Board announcements 6/15/06. Dear members, It has been little while since I spoke to you through the Internet. We the board are of course not sitting still and have fully focused on the structure plan after the general member meeting in Zwolle. That will allow us to present a basis for a new structure at the next general member meeting in October, which will warrant a future in which the KFPS based on proper manageability with trust can enter a new scenario of growth. Growth that will come for a significant part from foreign-member growth. It is good to see that the Friesian horse in many countries where we have representations but also in several new countries such as Spain, Russia, and the Czech Republic is experiencing growth. The Friesian horse has not even come close to reaching its limits. To the contrary! It is clear to us as the board that the Friesian horse is seen as and will continue to be considered a Frisian Cultural Heritage. This means that this value will be anchored into the new structural plan and there can in our opinion be no doubt as to where, e.g., the office, stallion show and central mare show will keep its roots: in Friesland. With our foreign members this is something that has never come up for discussion; they are simply proud to be a member of the family and a friend of our Friesian horse and to work together on beautiful future. It goes without saying that we are also active wherever possible to ensure that possible upcoming registration of foals stemming from breedings to FPZV stallions will take place in a manner that is as clear and as transparent as possible while guaranteeing that we safeguard the high quality of KFPS approved horses. It is still too early to give any definitive answers as the issues are too complex and too international. We do, however, have faith that we can come to a solution that is acceptable for the KFPS members. It’s encouraging to the board in general and to me in particular that little by little we seem to be taking KFPS back into quieter waters. With that comes a new start and looking into the future instead of at the past. There have been quite a few accusations back and forth over the past years. Not in the least with regard to the last change in the board. We have always tried as the new board to distance ourselves from this as best we could because in our eyes it has done KFPS more damage than good and everyone is innocent until proven guilty and not on the basis of insinuations alone. Quite a few people were hurt and that is bad. Again: in our opinion we have to end this and in light of this you need to see our offer to Jaap van der Meulen, former chairman of the KFPS, when we offered him last week to pick his activities back up as a chipper. It should be clear that we as the board want to give a clear signal to both him as well as the other former board members. We assume that if Mr. Van der Meulen accepts our invitation you will welcome him in a fashion that becomes the KFPS members, with the word I so often use: respect. Is there only peace and good cooperation to report? Unfortunately not. We had to make a not so pleasant decision as a board last week. A decision that had to perhaps have been made earlier but I kept having hope we didn’t have to make it. It was decided in our last board meeting on June 8 to revoke our trust in board member Bert Blom. This was a drastic decision and it was needless to say long and well thought of. However, when the basis of cooperation of Mr. Bert Blom is missing combined with a clear feeling of disloyalty regarding the fellow board members no other choice is left. It was therefore a difficult but at the same time unanimous decision. It goes without saying that we shared this decision right away both to the chairman of the Supervisory Committee Mr. Ad de Jong as well as to the chairman of the breeding chapters Mr. Waling Haytema. We had to come to the conclusion that the minimal requirements of manageability were no longer being met and there were disrupted relationships. You as a member have the last word in this of course. Our proposal is therefore to add this item to the agenda for the upcoming general member meeting in October as “board change.” We regret having to bother you with this but in this matter it would have been far worse not to make a decision. C. Roozemond Chairman KFPS Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Sport council in session! 6/14/06. Per the advice of the structural committee the KFPS board decided to set up a sport council. What are the goals and tasks of the sport council and how is it set up? Here is the introduction of the newest section of KFPS. Tasks. The big increase in Friesian horses in (recreational) sport disciplines is one of the most important reasons of the strong growth of the KFPS over the past years. To maintain and build on its sport position policies and strategies need to be developed. The sport council’s task is to advise the board about sport policy. The sport council will occupy itself with the following. Developing, maintaining, and transfer of knowledge of sport with the Friesian horse in the widest sense. Initiating and keeping current of (continued) education programs for sport participants, focusing on the Friesian horse. Bring specific expertise up to and keep it at the right level within the relevant sections of KFPS. Advise on a good registration of and cross referencing sport data to be used for breeding. The sport council can advise the board on profiles where it concerns the objective and tasks of the sport council. Composition Sport Council The sport council consists of members who have affinity with using the Friesian horse in sport. Representation will consist of: 3 persons from the show-driving and driving disciplines; 3 persons from the dressage discipline. One member of the inspection team will be added to the sport council as an advisor. The term limit is four years. Profiles for candidates General Appointment to member of the sport council may not lead to conflict of interest neither direct nor indirect. The candidate also needs to: · have integrity and a good reputation; · be open to the developments in the field of breeding, usage of horses in general and of the Friesian horse in particular; · have an added value to the objectives of the sport council with his/her knowledge and experience; · have affinity with the Friesian horse both regarding breeding and its usage; · be a team player; · be a good listener; · have an innovative attitude; · be prepared to attend continued education; · not be an employee of KFPS or its organizational entities; · not hold two positions within our organization. Chairman and vice chairman · Next to possessing meeting technical qualities and negation skills the persons holding these positions need to be able to manage and be natural leaders. · They also need to be proficient in Dutch and English. Applying for member of the sport council If you are interested in being on the sport council you can apply with the KFPS. You may do so by sending in a resume accompanied by a letter with your reason for applying. Suitable candidates will be invited for an interview. You may send your letter to: Koninklijke vereniging “Het Friesch Paarden Stamboek” attn. Ms. A.M. Smith, postbus 624, 9200 AP Drachten or marjasmith@fps-studbook.com. Source: KFPS website. On April 18, 2006 Gertjan van der Linden of Terwispel finally came eye to eye with the judge, 1 year and nine months after he had branded Oekje-Vrouwkje with an S after she made ster. The judge had postponed his verdict for 2 weeks after he had listened to the prosecutor, the subpoenaed expert Jaap van der Meulen, Van der Linden’s lawyer Tjalling van der Goot and Mr. Van der Linden himself. Van der Meulen was subpoenaed because he was the former chairman of the KFPS and had branded and chipped horses for 17 years. It is possible that also on May 2, 2006 no verdict will be rendered, because the judge eluded to wanting to have the case checked into further. The prosecutor is of the opinion that Van der Linden has violated the law, called the Intervention Decision, with his deliberate actions. Branding is prohibited in The Netherlands since September 1, 2001. The regulation took effect to be in line with European law. But the prosecutor id have some understanding for Van der Linden’s action. Van der Linden is of the opinion that branding of Friesian horses is part of Frisian culture. With his actions he wanted to provoke a discussion because elsewhere in Europe branding is still being done, except for Sweden, Belgium and some German states. “I am a Frisian too. You are fighting for a good cause,” said the prosecutor. But he also said that Van der Linden should have walked the political route to fight for his cause. The prosecutor stated that therefore Van der Linden is guilty of violating the law, but did not think punishment was due. Based on this same EU regulation defense lawyer van der Goot came to the conclusion after an impressive plea—on which he was complimented by the prosecutor—that Van der Linden is not guilty at all. “It’s either allowed everywhere or nowhere,” said Van der Goot. He based this on the agreed upon harmonizing of the law but if the largest part of EU countries does not uphold this regulation then you cannot convict someone, according to Van der Goot. Initially Van der Linden, after the Dept of Agriculture’s inspection service fined him, also received a so-called ban to exhibit. That meant that his mare was not to leave his premises, not even to the slaughterhouse as a matter of speaking. He therefore sent Oekje-Vrouwkje’s foal to the keuring accompanied by one of her daughters. Meanwhile Cees Veerman, Secretary/Minister of Agriculture, has had to turn back this ban. That happened after the verdict of a judge in Den Bosch, in a case not about horses actually but based on said Intervention Decision. It is interesting to mention that the powers-that-be are considering allowing freeze brands. Van der Meulen stated to the judge that freeze branding is not an option: “it results in white hairs.” Also Van der Meulen stated that in his 17 years as a brander he never saw a horse suffer: “they shy for a moment but I have never seen any burn blisters.” Branding is according to Van der Meulen no longer necessary for identification: it’s just part of the Friesian. “It gives the horse visible status,” said Van der Goot in his plea. De brander that branded Van der Linden’s mare has not been banned as a member of the identification team and is allowed to chip. The first judge that was to preside the case on March 8, 2006 did not take the case as he knew Van der Linden as a kitchen installer. The second judge was informed ahead of time of Van der Linden’s daily activities. He too was scratched as he had a kitchen installed by Van der Linden. Judge Bouke Jansen looked at Van der Linden closely when the case started. Both stated that they did not know each other. Source: Phryso May 2006. Back to index. The KFPS regulations on embryo transfer (ET) stated a maximum number of foals that could be registered per mare per year. This number was five. The KFPS board has decided, as suggested by the breeding council, to lift the restriction. The background of this decision is that the number of mares used for ET is increasing. KFPS is of the opinion that this is beneficial for breeding and that ET should be encouraged rather than restricted by regulations. An assumed negative effect of ET on inbreeding was the reason for the restriction. The breeding council is of the opinion that the effect of ET and lifting the restriction on the number of offspring will be nil. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. The loins are sufficiently muscled. The croup is of good length. The gaskin muscle is of good length. The forearms have sufficient length and the stance is good. The hind leg is straight in the pastern and of good quality. The walk is short and not always regular. The trot is roomy, powerful, and has sufficient self carriage. The front leg is lifted up and is placed sufficiently forward. The front leg could be placed a bit more under the body. The hind leg shows plenty of bend in the hocks. Tietse D. could move a bit more through his body. Height: 1.65m/16.1 hands. Performance. Tietse D. has been shown in dressage very successfully over the past years. He climbed up through the dressage ranks including intermediaire. This meets all the conditions that the KFPS set forth for possible selection consideration for a short version of the testing. In January 2006 the stallion inspection team advised positively to select Tietse D. for the short version of the testing. For the final judging the same criteria, next to the sport data, have been used that are also used for the selection of young stallions. Short Version of Testing. Tietse D. was based on exterior, movement, pedigree, and sport results selected for the short version of the testing. This testing was done from April 3 through April 15, 2006 in Paarden Centrum Fryslan in Drachten. Stall behavior. Tietse D. is an honest and reliable stallion that is easy to work with and quiet in his stall. No stall vices were noted. Willingness to work. On April 10, 2006 Tietse D. was judged by the stallion and performance inspection teams while being ridden by a guest rider. Result: Tietse D. shows good willingness to work while being ridden and lets himself be worked sufficiently to well. Both the trot and the canter give the rider a sufficient to good feeling. Conclusion. Given his exterior, pedigree, sport career, and character test the stallion inspection team is of the opinion that Tietse D. could deliver a positive contribution to the breeding of Friesian horses. The stallion inspection team advises the board to enter Tietse into the studbook registry for breeding. On behalf of the stallion inspection team, H. Draaijer. Height: 1.66m/16.1 ¼ hands. Performance. Tjibbe Ylcke has been shown in dressage successfully over the past years. He was also successfully shown one time in Prix St. George. This made him meet the conditions set forth by the KFPS to be eligible for selection for the short version of the testing. In February 2006 the stallion inspection team gave positive advice to select Tjibbe Ylcke for the short version of the testing. For the final judging the same criteria, next to the sport data, have been used that are also used for the selection of young stallions. Remark. Tjibbe Ylcke has been part of the regular inspection process for breeding stallions since November 2005. After the stallion show in January 2006 he successfully completed his test in Prix St. George with a score of over 65%. Quilty without sentence for branding Friesian mare, 4/21/06.
LEEUWARDEN – Guilty without
punishment is the verdict of the Officer of Justice Mr. H. Mous.
He subpoenaed Gert Jan van der Linden to the Leeuwarden court on
Tuesday. The Friesian breeder from Terwispel had his mare
Oekje-Vrouwkje branded in her neck in 2004 after she became ster.
His goal: to initiate a trial, because, a brand has cultural and
historical value for the Friesian horse. “Branding is supposedly
illegal for horses but elsewhere in Europe it happens. The EU
strives for unity in Europe and they should treat it the same in
every country. We should not be discriminated against. Either
you brand everywhere or nowhere. That’s why I provoked this
trial by branding my mare and making that publicly known. It
didn’t take long before the inspection team of the Agriculture
Department showed up, as I had planned and so now I’m in court,”

Pieter Tuinman esq. candidate board member KFPS, 4/4/06. “They did not ask me for my knowledge of the horse” Mr. Pieter Tuinman Esq., candidate board member KFPS. By: Jacob Melissen. LEEUWARDEN - Pieter Tuinman (60), married and father of 4 children will be presented by the board as a candidate board member at the upcoming KFPS member meeting in Zwolle on April 28. Mr. Tuinman, who is a lawyer and was born in Harlingen, holds office in a stately building that a long time ago offered a view of the famous Leeuwarden livestock market. The matters that Mr. Tuinman deals with most are business law, real estate, and commercial contracts. In addition he is specialized in copyrights, particularly in connection with architecture. Mr. Tuinman became nationally known in the case that was brought to court by the famous Friesian architect Ir. A. Bonnema to prevent that buildings designed by him in the town of Tietjerksteradeel would be equipped with sun screens. These sun screens would have changed the design from what it was intended to be by Bonnema. Mr. Tuinman is the first to describe his specialty as a hobby. He resided in the town of Groningen outside Friesland for three years after finishing his law degree. “If you are not in Friesland you want to be there. If you are in Friesland then you sometimes wonder why. That’s probably my romantic heart.” So where is Mr. Tuinman’s connection with the Friesian horse? “Kaatsen (a Frisian ball game), fierlieppen (a Friesian sport of pole jumping streams), skutsjesilen (a Frisan boat race), the 11 town skating tour, and the Friesian horse are 5 core elements of Friesland where sport and culture are not just connected with each other but are also intermingled. It’s the Friesian element of it with which every Frisian can identify. Every Frisian is rightfully proud of it that all this exists to this day and that is should not just be stimulated, cherished, and developed for the future but also needs to be preserved,” says Tuinman, who wants to make himself strong for this case. In Mr. Tuinman’s eyes when it concerns the Friesian horse it’s about safeguarding the Frisian origins and the relationship with Friesland for the future. “The Friesian horse makes an impression worldwide and is therefore no longer just a Friesian matter but we have to be respectful of the roots of this breed.” Mr. Tuinman is aware of the developments. “The Friesian horse is developing and breeding not a static matter. Innovations in breeding objectives can only be implemented with the utmost care. I also think it is important that a wide variety in use of the Friesian horse is preserved. If I am elected into the board as an outsider to the breeding industry that the board needs to lead in this. My dedication is clear,” and for the first time during this conversation he emphasizes his words: “Conservation of the Frisian heritage within the studbook and within the breed, a horse that with its friendly nature gives the joy that people desire to countless people around the world.” Pieter Tuinman resides in Boksum and his grandfather on his mother’s side was a farmer at “Op Hatsum” in Dronrijp. At his historic farm in Boksum there are no horses. “The fact that I don’t have horses might be an advantage for serving on the board but I don’t think this was a reason for asking me. To be honest I think that my managerial and legal background played a more important role to ask me (I was a board member of the Frysk Museum for 16 years). I said “yes” to the question of becoming a board member as I am proud of Friesland, its culture and everything that is connected to and part of that." Read more by subscribing to my news e-mails. Based on the final judging under saddle for the spring Central Proving the stallions Grandus von Kimmen and Hindrik have graduated to the second part of the Central Proving where the stallions will be judged in harness. The stallions Goeie van de Zonschate and Haakon von Hof Klaeperisch will not continue. The presentation of the stallion Hilbert fan Ferwalde was unusual such that the judging team decided to vet check the stallion. Based on the results the judges could possibly decide to postpone a final judging. This possible postponed final judging needs to take place before April 1, 2006 per the regulations. The final judging for driving and show driving will take place on April 15. At that time it will also be determined which stallions will be entered into the studbook registry. Of the rare Age stallion line and the much sought after dam line 43, which produced legendary FPS Approved Friesian Stallions Age 168, the Preferent Hearke 254, Lammert 260, and Naen 264, Melle offers a rare opportunity for the American Breeder. As his impressive progeny clearly demonstrate, this truly unique stallion reproduces his athletic talent, wonderful temperament, and magnificent Friesian type. Recently a number of disapproved stallions and stallions that did not make it during the inspection’s selection rounds have again been approved by FPZV. The approval of the KFPS disapproved and not selected stallions is not new but now that two of these stallions are being offered on the Dutch market the KFPS is forced to defend itself. The FPZV is one of the 12 (!) recognized studbooks for registration of Friesian horses in Germany. The FPZV was part of KFPS until 1991 and then split off. The most important reason for the split was that the FPZV members found that the bar of the KFPS inspection standards was too high. A big factor for the split was especially the fact that because of these standards the chance of a stallion owned by a FPZV member being approved was small. At the same time of the split by FPZV a new association was founded in Germany, the DFZ, which became part of KFPS. Meanwhile the DFZ has some 1600 members while the number of FPZV members is some 300 to 400. The number of horses in both registries is similar. In spite of the FPZV’s small size the number of approved stallions is not much smaller than the number of approved stallions with KFPS. Often it concerns stallions that were disapproved by KFPS or stallions that were not selected during the stallion inspection rounds. Since the split there has not been any contact between the former boards of the KFPS and FPZV. Especially regarding the structural changes within KFPS, in which the foreign countries play a crucial role, the KFPS concluded last year that the situation in Germany needs to be studied anew, possibly to revise it, and to bring it in line with EU regulations, which have been in place for this since 1992. A situation in Germany with 12 organizations that register Friesian horses (not working with KFPS) does not make finding a solution simple however. Invitations regarding this issue that were sent to the FPZV last year went unanswered. The KFPS therefore decided at the beginning of 2006, in consultation with the PVE (Livestock Department of the Dutch Department for Agricultural) to instead of an informal route take the formal route, as stated in EU regulations. In this regard a letter was sent to the PVE a few weeks ago in which the undesirable situation in Germany was brought to the attention. The PVE will in turn bring this case up with the German authorities. Until now the activities of the FPZV were tolerated by the KFPS. The reason for this is that the competition in Germany was considered as very minor. Given the recent developments, such as the unfolding of activities by FPZV in other EU countries, the KFPS has revised its position on this, especially given the KFPS responsibilities as the original mother studbook. It happens frequently that mares not awarded predicates abroad are made ster by FPZV. The KFPS feels that the strong position that the Friesian horse currently has in the world is for a large part thanks to the strict and high inspection standards that are maintained as part of the selection process. The use of stallions (and mares) by daughter studbooks that do not adhere to this standard is viewed by KFPS as a very undesirable development. The KFPS thinks it important to clarify this situation and is of the opinion that the activities of the FPZV are harmful to the further development of the breed. This has been stated in abovementioned letter to the PVE. The status of the disapproved stallions will not change with KFPS. This will also be the case if offspring will be offered for registration with KFPS. KFPS is for that matter assuming that the market for KFPS disapproved stallions in The Netherlands will not be big. New Structure KFPS. Agenda item “New Structure KFPS” / member meeting spring 2006. After the member meeting of April 2005 the structure committee, in its new set-up, eagerly started their job with as the end goal to present a final proposal for structural changes at the General Member Meeting in the spring of 2006. The proposals have been discussed in the various organizational sections of the KFPS both internally and externally and where possible adjustments have been made in the advisory report. The impression was that both the Dutch members and the foreign managing members who joined in on the discussions were positive about the presented draft. This resulted in the posting of advisory report version 2.0 on the KFPS website back in December 2005. Since the fall of 2005 there have also been various discussions with the DFZ board. During a conversation of a delegation of the KFPS management team and the management of DFZ on January 13, 2006 it became clear, however, that the proposal regarding the membership of the foreign associations was unacceptable to the DFZ. In a publication it was suggested that the rejudging of the 3rd viewing stallions in Drachten on February 1 had been unnecessary. This statement is based on the regulations “inspection 3rd viewing stallions” in which a procedure is described for the stallions from the 3rd viewing that have not been selected for the Central Proving. These regulations offer the possibility to these stallions, who in hand were just not good enough in movement to be selected for the performance test (also called “fall testing”). In this judging, which takes place in the fall following the stallion inspection the stallions are judged on exterior, do a test under saddle, and a test in harness. The stallion inspection team can based on this performance select the stallion for the next central proving. This idea is, however, incorrect for to the following reason. Source: KFPS website. On 1/17 Mr. Lykele Aardema informed the chairman of the KFPS that he will step down from his board position immediately. The reason is twofold: - the complexity to according to his opinion and view correctly put the new structure into place, especially where it concerns the structure for foreign countries; - the enormous amount of time the board postion has taken up and the impact of that time pressure. The KFPS regrets his decision very much but also respects it. It has been decided that Mr. Douwe Willemsma will take on Mr. Aardema's tasks, emphasizing that given the importance and the advanced phase in which the start-up of the new structure currently is, the new structure will be a matter all board members are involved with. Ritse is 17, was bred by the same breeder as Ritske 202, he bred in Belgium after his approval where he was also approved on offspring, and has 1 approved son since 2002: Wikke 404. Results testing on offspring. Based on the testing on offspring the stallions Maiko 373, Monte 378, Olrik 383, Mintse 384 en Ulbert 390 were approved. Maiko 373 was put on hold last year because he could not be judged properly with a small number of offspring. The stallions Otte 375, Marten 377, Riemer 378 were disapproved based on the testing. The stallions Jorrit 363 and Jelke were reviewed again per the request of their owners and remain disapproved. On the KFPS site you can click through to the fokwaarden = breeding values. The breeding values for exterior are based on the linear-score information at the time of studbook entry and the breeding values for sport aptitude are based on the data from the ABFP tests. There is a link on the KFPS site for the breeding values of all KFPS studbook stallions. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. Leffert 306 preferent! The KFPS approved studbook stallion Leffert 306 is now preferent! 2 years ago the request was not honored by the inspection team to wait for more offspring-testing information. With the recent approval of Mintse 384 the number of approved sons is now 3. Next to Mintse there is Heintse 354 and Onne 376 who are approved. The for now last preliminarily approved Leffert son, Tsjalke 397, will go through his offspring testing in 2006. 20 year old Leffert is owned by Mr. Doller in Haulerwijk and is known for passing on excellent exterior with especially good front. Next to 4 approved sons Leffert already has provided 249 ster mares and 5 model mares. Leffert offspring also play an important role in harness. His sons Tsjalke, Heinse, and Onne are multiple champions at the highest levels. Source: KFPS website. Back to index. 2 day stallion inspection 2006.
